Disney Plus is mixing things up with its release of Loki, moving up its premiere date and changing the whole schedule for new episodes going forward, a deviation from its normal Friday releases.
They had Tom Hiddleston announce it himself in a promotional video below, but the long and short of it is that Loki will now release on Wednesday, June 9, not June 11, and new episodes will arrive on Wednesdays going forward, not Fridays.
This is a switch from Disney Plus’s usual idea of putting its big premieres on Fridays, which they’ve done with The Mandalorian for two seasons now, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Presumably this was to get a full weekend of buzz out of each episode, which seemed to work pretty well, but it appears they want to be a bit more experimental with Loki.
At a certain point, Disney is going to have enough series to double or triple up its weekly releases, given the massive slate of Star Wars and Marvel projects still to come. So it stands to reason they may want to test out different days so they can have some expectation of future performance if they have things airing on say, Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays in a given week.
Loki, once thought to be a one-off miniseries, is actually the only Marvel show that has already been greenlit for a second season. WandaVision seems unlikely to return and Scarlet Witch is heading to the next Doctor Strange movie. Falcon and the Winter Soldier may get a second season eventually but the only thing that’s been announced is Captain America 4 starring Sam Wilson.
Loki will follow the adventures of a not-dead Loki who escaped his fate in Infinity War by escaping from custody after the events of the original Avengers movie when the team went back in time for Endgame. This causes…problems, and the trailers have been all over the place in terms of what to expect.
We are still over a month away from the Loki premiere, even with the moved-up release date, which is a longer gap than we had between WandaVision and Falcon. But again, we are heading toward a place where Disney is going to have more Marvel and Star Wars shows than it knows what to do with as its content machine whirrs to life, so expect more shows more often, and on more days of the week like Loki here.
