Meghan surprises students at London university - ITV News

The Duchess of Sussex delighted student well-wishers when she visited a London university to learn more about the work of a Commonwealth institution.

Students descended on University of London when she arrived to chat to scholars and academics from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), an organisation the duchess supports as patron.

Hundreds of young people cheered and waved Union flags when the heavily pregnant duchess arrived in her chauffeur-driven car.

The ACU brings together universities, academics and students from around the world to advance knowledge, promote understanding, broaden minds and improve lives.

Meghan chatted to groups of students from across the world researching issues like disability, sustainability and peace and reconciliation.

Joanna Newman, chief executive and secretary general of the ACU, said: "Our new patron, of course, has such a fantastic record of speaking up about the issues we most care about in higher education, whether it’s equity of access, gender and girls, or a whole host of other issues."

Established in 1913, the ACU is one of the world’s oldest international university networks, with more than 500 member institutions in over 50 countries.

It manages international scholarship schemes - including the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships - which offer educational opportunities, convenes universities to address key policy challenges, and promotes the role of universities in delivering the UN’s sustainable development goals.
