CHESHIRE — The COVID-19 crisis has brought out the craftiness and resourcefulness of some of town residents.
While many face masks are now out of stock due to the high demand, residents have gotten creative with their facial coverings — using scarves, bandanas, or anything else they can find around the house.
A local 10-year-old has come up with a new way to create a face mask with an item you can probably find at a dollar store.
“My brother and my dad were going to the store, but my brother didn’t have a mask, so I ran downstairs to see what I could find,” said 10-year-old Medianna Barclay.
She found a stash of eye coverings for sleeping and had an idea.
“I just flipped the eye mask upside down and it covered his face perfectly,” Barclay said.
The eye masks, if they have a nose guard, fit over the nose and mouth, allowing for minimal transmission of any potentially harmful germs.
“I’ve been buying masks like these for my family since there are so many of us in one house trying to sleep,” said Barlcay’s mother, Hollie. “One kid sleeps with a night light and the other wants it to be completely dark, so you can imagine the bickering that goes on.”
She purchased a 30-pack of sleeping masks from Amazon for roughly $11 and, when her daughter found a new use for them, she was eager to buy another pack.
“While these masks are probably not ideal for healthcare workers to wear to work, they at least work for the rest of us as we go about trying to adjust to the new normal,” Hollie Barclay added.
Since Barclay posted her daughter’s idea on Facebook, she has received multiple messages from residents asking where they can buy the masks.
“It was a really cool thing to see that people liked my idea and used it” Medianna said. “I told all my friends about it during a Zoom meeting and they thought it was a great idea, too.”
