'The Masked Singer' season finale recap: Night Angel flies to victory in close competition - USA TODAY

Spoiler alert! The following contains spoilers from the Season 3 finale of "The Masked Singer," including the winner and the identities of the three unmasked celebrities.

The final masks have been lifted on Season 3 of "The Masked Singer."

A somehow more absurd season of Fox's ridiculous reality singing show concluded with the final three competitors singing one last time for glory and the golden trophy in front of host Nick Cannon and panelists Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy and Ken Jeong. Plus, we finally got to find out who was under the masks of the Frog, Turtle and Night Angel.

After the songs were sung and the final votes were tallied, it was Night Angel who took the victory for Season 3, the first time a woman has won the competition. (The Season 2 and 1 winners were Wayne Brady and T-Pain, respectively).

But who was singing so angelically under all that fabric? Find out in our recap of the grand finale.

The Frog

Frog was first to sing Wednesday night, with one final clue package that alluded to "hater," "no limits" and his "little tadpole."

He sung (or rather, rapped) "Bad Boy for Life" by Black Rob, Mark Curry and P. Diddy. The judges loved it, and Scherzinger thought the performance was worthy of opening an MTV awards show. After finishing his final performance on the show, Frog expressed appreciation for the process. "I've never done choreography in my life until I came to 'The Masked Singer,'" he said, which had a big impact on the panel's guesses.

After his performance, When it was time for their guesses on who the hip-hoppity star might be, McCarthy went with Lil Romeo/Romeo/Romeo Miller, because of the "no limits" clue, Jeong with rapper Kid Cudi and Scherzinger, bizarrely, with MC Hammer. (Um, he's definitely done choreography before, as Cannon aptly demonstrated.)

The Turtle

Second to sing was Turtle. His final clue package hammered  home the idea that he's had a lot of "almost" moments in his career, and a lot of heartbreak and disappointment. It also mentioned the new Mrs. Turtle, something the judges latched onto. He crooned out a performance of "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi that made Scherzinger cry, so yeah, the judges liked it.

They tried to name the dapper reptile, with Scherzinger going with former teen idol Jesse McCartney, Jeong picking Nick Jonas (hoping Mrs. Turtle was Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and McCarthy going with Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys fame. (But she wished she'd thought of Jonas.)

Night Angel

The episode saved the best for last, with Night Angel finishing up the, well, night.

Her last clue package discussed how she didn't find success as a "solo artist," developed other businesses behind the scenes in music and revealed she is a mother.

She belted out a performance of Tina Turner's absolute classic "River Deep, Mountain High" and did the song justice, and we should have known from that moment she would win the night.

After she brought down the house she humbly said, her voice cracking as if she might cry, "Normally I just try to shy away from the microphone, because I started to think that I didn't sing that good anymore."

Of course, Cannon found a way to undercut one momenton this show that wasn't over-produced. "Some true and real authentic emotions," he said, breaking out the thesaurus.

The final clues lead Scherzinger to suggest Angel was "Empire" star Taraji P. Henson, but McCarthy and Robin Thicke went with singer, songwriter and "Real Housewives" star Kandi Burruss.

The results are in …

The audience and the panelists voted one last time this season, and the Frog took third, Turtle took second and Night Angel won it all.

But winners and losers aren't the point of this show, really.

The triple unmasking began with the Frog, and the judges had to put their final guesses on record. Jeong stuck with Kid Cudi, McCarthy with Romeo and Thicke and Scherzinger picked Bow Wow. And when that giant head came off, it was Bow Wow.

The performer, whose real name is Shad Gregory Moss, is the first rapper to make it this far on the show, as Canon noted.

Next up in the great unmasking was Turtle. Jeong's final guess was Jonas, Scherzinger and McCarthy were sold on McCartney and Thicke took a big swing with Adam Lambert.

Beneath that shell it really was McCartney.

When he was revealed, the former teen idol expressed his appreciation for Thicke. "That's my guy. Like, the entire time, I've been doin' this, I've been … singin', but I've been like this (jaw dropped)," he said. "It's been an honor and a pleasure to play for you, my man."

After revealing the two runners-up, "Singer" got down to the business of discovering who was the first woman to walk off with the golden mask trophy. The judges, one last time, offered their thoughts. Scherzinger stuck with Henson, Jeong went with Tisha Campbell, McCartney and Thicke were stuck on Burruss.

And the winner actually was Kandi Burruss.

After she was revealed, the winner thanked panel members for her "Singer" experience: "I just really appreciate you guys for helping me build my confidence back up."

That's it for Season 3 of "The Masked Singer," a mixed-up show for a mixed-up world.
