As coronavirus cases surge across California, reopening plans in many counties have paused or been rolled back.
The decision is the state’s attempt to slow the growth of case totals that have swelled since some counties began allowing businesses to reopen and loosened restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings. Statewide, positive test rates are up from 4.9% two weeks ago to nearly 7%.
It can be challenging to keep track of the changes in restrictions in your county. Here’s what you need to know about what you can — and can’t — do right now. And remember, the state requires the use of face masks when in public.
Where can I eat and drink?
In Alameda, outdoor dining is open. Bars can serve alcohol outdoors, but only with sit-down meals. Wineries can serve tastings with food pairings outside. Bars and wineries that do not offer outdoor sit-down dining are not open.
Napa, San Mateo and Sonoma are open for outdoor dining, and wineries and bars that provide sit-down food service are open, with certain modifications for safety.
The state has ordered that outdoor and indoor bars in Contra Costa and Solano close until the counties are removed from the state watch list, though both can continue outdoor dining.
In Marin, opening indoor dining has been halted, though outdoor dining is still allowed.
Outdoor dining establishments are open in Santa Clara.
San Francisco’s bars, wineries and indoor dine-in eating establishments are closed. Outdoor bars are also closed, though outdoor dining is allowed. They won’t open or reopen on July 13, as initially intended.
Can I go see a movie?
Movie theaters and drive-ins are allowed to operate business with certain modifications in most counties. However, in Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Solano, only drive-in theaters are allowed to open.
What other activities can I do?
Entertainment centers, zoos, museums, casinos, gyms, hair salons and barbershops can open in most Bay Area counties except for Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Solano.
What about the Monterey Bay Aquarium?
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is not yet open.
What is open statewide?
Essential businesses remains open. That includes: gas stations, pharmacies, food stores, take-out and delivery restaurants, banks, laundromats and childcare.
Retailers (like shopping malls, libraries and bookstores, clothing stores, home and sporting goods) can also open, though they will require certain social-distancing modifications.
What can’t I do anywhere?
Services such as nail salons, body waxing, tattoo parlors saunas and steam rooms are deemed high-risk and are therefor not open.
Likewise for public events that attract large gatherings, like live audience sports, convention centers, theme parks and festivals
Indoor playgrounds (for example: ball pits and laser tag) are closed. Recreational team sports have also been halted.
Is BART running?
BART will provide service with 30-minute intervals, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Though service on the Warm Springs-Daly City and Richmond-Millbrae lines will end earlier in the evening. Service is from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
