'The Umbrella Academy' Faces Armageddon (Again) In Season 2's Opening Scene - Decider

Now, listen, I’m no student of history. TV history or movie history, maybe; but when it comes to dates that mean things to the majority of the world, I’m at a total loss. But I can say with almost near certainty that on November 25, 1963, the world wasn’t destroyed in a nuclear apocalypse that started in Dallas, Texas. Except that’s exactly what happens in the opening scene of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy Season 2, which you can watch above.

After failing to stop one end of the world scenario in the Season 1 finale, the super-powered, super-angsty adults of the Umbrella Academy are thrust back in time to the 1960s in Season 2. Only — spoiler — they don’t end up in Dallas in the same year. And then they have to deal with another end of the world scenario in the form of a nuclear doomsday, as witnessed by the time-traveling Five (Aidan Gallagher) in the season’s opening scene.

Not only that, but it’s caused by the Soviets attacking the United States after, according to a newspaper headline, “JFK DECLARES WAR ON THE REDS.” Now, again, not a huge history buff here, but wasn’t President John F. Kennedy, Jr. assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963? Three days before, in The Umbrella Academy, he declared a war that ultimately destroyed the world? Certainly seems like Five and his siblings being thrust back in time might have messed with the timeline… Just a little bit.

That’s not all that’s different in the clip: the “kids” are all teaming up to hold back the apocalypse, using their powers together for possibly the first time since they were teens. That includes the previously muted/throat slit Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman) using her reality manipulating rumor powers, Klaus (Robert Sheehan) controlling ghosts, Diego (David Castañeda) twisting knives in the air like he just don’t care, the gorilla-bodied Luther (Tom Hopper) now comfortable with his shirt off, ghostly Ben (Justin H. Min) using his tentacled Kraken powers, and even Vanya (Ellen Page), now seemingly in control of her White Violin identity.

That’s not all, though… An older Hazel (Cameron Britton), the sweet assassin who ran off with a doughnut salesman last season, is back, warning Five that if he wants to stop the nukes he need to come with him and teasing a bigger plot at play. And again without getting into spoilers, the much improved second season of the series has plenty of twists and turns in store, as well as new villains and plenty of chances to hang out with your favorite members of the Hargreeves family. Plus: 1960s setting! It’s like The Umbrella Academy meets Back to the Future, in the best way.

All 10 episodes of The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premieres Friday on Netflix.
