GFRIEND is back with a new EP, 回: Song of the Sirens, and title track “Apple” heralds a new era for the South Korean girl group.
On July 13, the six-member act (made up of members Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, Sinb, and Umji) released the mesmerizing music video for the song. Clocking in at just over four minutes, the video is rife with classic references and symbolism. During a media showcase, also held on July 13, the members confirmed both the video and the track itself are inspired by the theme of temptation – and it’s clear to see how.
In a reference to the Biblical forbidden fruit with which Eve changes the course of mankind, the video opens up with Yerin grabbing a glistening red apple from a leafy tree and taking a bite that makes her drift into a sound sleep. Shortly after, we see the six girls breaking out to some noteworthy choreography in a Garden of Eden-esque setting as they embrace the temptations around them, with the whole video ending in a more somber, yet empowered, tone.
Not surprisingly, temptation is also often referenced amply in the track’s lyrics. “Ooh no, this sweet scent / Bright ruby drops draw me in / Ooh no, lead me more into temptation / Yes, your scent your color / Infuse me with pleasure,” the girls sing, per YouTube’s official lyric translations. “Infusing with color all my grey decisions / Nothing, no words can stop me here / Past my fingers and lips streams of red nectar fall / Dizzying scent draws me near / I like it, I like it, more I like it all.”
The song itself is described as having “a mystical atmosphere” by the group's label, and the music video certainly reflects that. Members Eunha and Yuju both participated in the song’s composition, and the former also contributed to writing the lyrics for the track.
With “Apple” as the lead single, 回: Song of the Sirens is the sextet’s ninth EP and the girl group’s second comeback of 2020, following the release of 回: Labyrinth in February. 回: Song of the Sirens represents a full metamorphosis for the six stars, both thematically and creatively.
Speaking about the album during the media showcase, the members revealed that, though slightly fearful of fan perception, while creating the EP they longed for a “dramatic” transformation. “We tried our best to showcase a different side of us,” leader Sowon said via an interpreter during the media showcase, a sentiment that was echoed by the rest of the group. “We always think about changing as we continue our musical careers. We’ve shown how we’ve changed and grown but rather than these incremental or smaller changes we wanted to showcase something that everyone could say ‘wow, that’s an amazing dramatic transformation’ when working on this album.”
