Kimbrel's great idea for socially distant celebrations - Comcast SportsNet Chicago

One of Major League Baseball's health and safety protocols for 2020 is the banning of players/staff high fiving, a habit ingrained into sports celebrations that will be difficult for players to forget.

As the Cubs closer, Craig Kimbrel pitches almost exclusively in big moments. When his outings end in a save, he meets his catcher near the pitcher's mound to embrace after closing off a victory.

How will Kimbrel and his teammates celebrate at any point in a game this season with the protocols in place? The 32-year-old has some ideas.

"Maybe we all need to have gloves in our back pocket or something," Kimbrel said. "We can pull them out, high five, put them back in."

Kimbrel's other idea is pure genius.

"Maybe we'll do something with our feet," he said. "I don't think there's anything about hitting each other's feet, so we're not doing high fives, maybe we're doing foot taps or something."

Foot taps! Players can stay several feet apart and make contact with their cleats, not needing to wash their hands after. It's different and will probably look funny, but this season is different.

Bring on the foot taps.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo (lower back) is day-to-day, manager David Ross said Wednesday.

Rizzo, who’s missed time in recent seasons with back issues, sat out Summer Camp activities on Tuesday and Wednesday with lower back tightness.

“He came in yesterday, felt a little stiffness in some similar areas that he’s been sore before and [we’re] just getting ahead of it,” Ross told reporters in Wednesday’s Zoom session. “We had a light day yesterday with just the 2 1/2 innings and then a really light day of just live BP today.

“He's day-to-day but I just wanted to make sure at this time in the schedule that we use caution."

Rizzo entered Summer Camp in great shape, having lost 25 pounds during baseball's shutdown while training with Cubs quality assurance coach Mike Napoli.

The Cubs added utility player Hernán Pérez to their player pool, the team announced Wednesday. He joined the team at Wrigley field for workouts that afternoon.

Pérez, 29, signed with the Cubs as a fee agent in December and was a non-roster invite in Spring Training. With his addition this summer, the Cubs have filled 51 of the spots in their 60-player pool.

"If we get to a place where we feel we need more major-league depth, we can pivot in that direction," Hoyer said two weeks ago. "If we get to a place where we feel like we can add a few more prospects to our list then we can do that as well.”

Pérez’s versatility gives the Cubs flexibility as well. The eight-year veteran can play practically anywhere in the field besides behind the plate. Last season with the Brewers, Pérez recorded a .228 batting average over 91 games.
