Perhaps more than any other year in history, 2020 was the period when the biggest K-pop songs weren’t just viral sensations or trending topics, but proper global smashes. A number of groups from South Korea landed major wins on radio, streaming services and charts in countless countries with their latest singles, and now the most-talked-about of them all have been assembled.
Twitter has revealed a list of the 10 most-mentioned K-pop songs on the site in 2020, and one name dominates the field.
BTS, the biggest name in K-pop, ended 2020 with six of the top 10 most-mentioned K-pop tracks on Twitter globally, and it’s not shocking to see their name not just atop the ranking, but in several spaces near the front.
The septet’s “Dynamite,” easily their most successful release yet, takes the crown, and while Twitter didn’t reveal exactly how many tweets mentioned the tune, it was probably quite a bit more than any other title on the list. The song was a huge hit pretty much everywhere, and despite the fact it was released in August, it is still going strong in many territories.
The same band fills the next three spots, as BTS’s singles “On,” “Black Swan” and “Life Goes On,” all cuts released in 2020, appear at Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The seven-member vocal outfit also sees their songs close out the ranking, as “Boy With Luv,” a 2019 release, and “Shadow” come in at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.
Four other South Korean acts—Got7, NCT 2020, Blackpink and Twice—also found space on the 10-spot tally, with each claiming one rung.
The social media platform appears to be loosely using the term “K-pop,” as the most-mentioned track of the bunch, BTS’s “Dynamite,” isn’t often described as such. The tune is performed entirely in English, and it stands as essentially a simple pop cut that happens to be performed by a band from South Korea, which isn’t usually what defines K-pop.
Twitter reports that in 2020, 6.7 billion tweets about K-pop were sent. That’s a new record, according to the site.
