BTS’s ‘Butter’ Scores Biggest Song Debut In Spotify History - Forbes

BTS’s “Butter” got off to a smooth streaming start on Friday, notching the biggest song debut in Spotify history.

The hotly anticipated disco-pop anthem earned 11.042 million global Spotify streams yesterday, breaking the platform’s opening day record formerly held by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber’s “I Don’t Care” (10.977 million on May 10, 2019). “Butter” debuted at No. 2 on the global Spotify chart overall, behind Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” (12.192 million), which has ruled the global chart since Monday.

BTS’s newest single scored the ninth-biggest single-day streaming total overall, behind two Rodrigo songs ( “Good 4 U” and “Drivers License”) and a handful of Christmas classics.

“Butter” debuted at No. 10 on the U.S. Spotify chart with 1.917 million streams—a career best for the group—trailing nine songs off Rodrigo’s new album, Sour, which came out yesterday. It’s a testament to BTS’s global popularity that more than 9 million of the first-day streams for “Butter” came from outside the United States.

BTS also enjoyed some hefty supplemental streams from the instrumental version of “Butter,” which debuted at No. 43 on the global Spotify chart with 1.883 million streams. Cumulatively, both versions of BTS’s new single earned close to 13 million global first-day streams.

“Butter” marks BTS’s best single-day Spotify performance by a huge margin. Their previous best came last summer with “Dynamite,” a similarly ebullient disco-pop smash that debuted with 7.778 million global and 1.824 million U.S. Spotify streams.

This is not the first record formerly held by “Dynamite” that “Butter” has broken. The music video for “Butter” earned the biggest premiere in YouTube history, drawing more than 3.9 million concurrent viewers (nearly a million more than former reigning champ “Dynamite”), and it has tentatively broken YouTube’s 24-hour debut record with an estimated 112.855 million views, surpassing the 101.1 million first-day views earned by “Dynamite.”

“Dynamite” ignited a remarkable, ongoing commercial hot streak for BTS, becoming their first of three consecutive No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. “Butter” will face stiff competition Rodrigo on next week’s Hot 100, but it could very well earn the pop septet its fourth No. 1 hit.
