On April 7, I sent a letter to our Jefferson County commissioners regarding the homeless encampment at the fairgrounds. As noted in several Leader articles, the location of the homeless camp has apparently generated multiple complaints from neighbors.
My April 7 letter was to suggest an alternative site: approximately 85 acres already owned by the county; no close neighbors, yet within walking distance of all major services; a site offering excellent security.
To date I’ve received no response from our commissioners.
Now, in my May 19 copy of The Leader, I read an article entitled: “Jefferson County wants to buy 14 acres in Port Townsend for homeless housing.” This property is apparently for sale for $1.495 million.
As noted above, the county already owns what might be suitable property, with no additional cost. For just a few thousand dollars, a kitchen, restrooms, showers, septic, water and electricity could be installed. What do you think?
