Joy of K-pop girl group Red Velvet is making a splash with her first solo album, "Hello."
The retro-flavored "Hello" dominated iTunes' top album chart in 26 countries including Argentina, Egypt and Singapore. The album's namesake lead track, which is a remake of singer Park Hye-kyung's 1999 release, also secured No. 1 spots on the local streaming charts, Genie and Bugs.
"Hello" carries six remakes of hits from the 1990s and 2000s: "Je T'aime," "Day by Day," "If Only," "Happy Birthday to You" and "Be There for You."
The tracks hit major streaming sites on Monday, but the physical album will come out on June 3.
During an online media conference on Monday, the SM Entertainment star revealed why she decided to put out the remakes.
"Numerous people told me my voice matches well with the songs of the old days," she said. "In fact, a lot of people were fond of my previous remake, 'Introduce Me to Someone Good' (2020)."
She added, "Picking the tunes for the album was tough. I had to find a link among the different tracks and also deal with copyright issues. But thankfully, the singers of all the original songs allowed me to remake their works."
Joy is the second Red Velvet member to go solo, following Wendy, who in April dropped her first solo album, "Like Water."
"I want to be a person who lives up to my stage name, Joy," she said. "I received a lot of positive energy while gearing up for this album, so I hope I can also pass that joy onto the listeners."
Joy, whose real name is Park Soo-young, debuted as a Red Velvet member in 2014, with the album, "Happiness." The act rolled out a string of hits, such as, "Russian Roulette" (2016) and "Bad Boy" (2017).
