BTS And Olivia Rodrigo Have Made 2021 A Historic Year On The Hot 100 - Forbes

After running the show on the Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks with their summer smash “Butter,” BTS is back at No. 1 on the chart (not that they ever stepped away) with their latest champion “Permission to Dance.” The tune debuts atop the tally, instantly becoming the band’s fifth leader and their fourth track to start off in first place on the list.

With another quick ruler to their credit, BTS join one of the hottest new names in the music industry and make 2021 a historic year on the Hot 100.

2021 is now the second year in the half-century-long history of the Hot 100 in which more than one musician has collected several No. 1 debuts. Of the more than 1,100 songs that have reached the summit on the competitive roster in the decades it’s been published by Billboard, fewer than 60 have launched in first place. A very small number of artists have scored several instant leaders, and it’s extremely rare for even the biggest names in the business to do so more than once in the same calendar year.

Last year marked the first time in Billboard’s history in which more than one artist collected several No. 1 debuts. Before 2020, Mariah Carey and Drake had managed the incredible show of popularity, but their successes were separated by two decades.

In 2020, Travis Scott, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and BTS all debuted at least two songs atop the Hot 100, with three tracks by Grande launching atop the list.

So far in 2021, both BTS and Olivia Rodrigo have both seen two singles open in first place on the Hot 100, making this year just the second in Billboard’s tenure with such a showing by more than one act.

Rodrigo became the first musician to grab a pair of Hot 100 No. 1 debuts in 2021, as her first proper single “Drivers License” opened atop the list back in January while “Good 4 U,” the third official promotional track from her album Sour, arrived ahead of every other title in May.

BTS score back-to-back No. 1 debuts on the Hot 100, as “Permission to Dance” replaces “Butter” in first place on the ranking.
