Former Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson is one of the highest-profile athletes ever to come out of Central New York, but he says the newly-adopted NCAA policy allowing college athletes to get paid for their celebrity is a "bad idea."
"It's a bad idea that was inevitable," McPherson said. "And, it was inevitable because there was a lack of vision, and creativity and innovation on the part of higher education."
McPherson, who finished second in the Heisman balloting in 1987, says he wouldn't have actively pursued financial gains from his name, image or likeness because he always considered his free education to be a big enough benefit, and one that would last him a lifetime.
"What this legislation also does, is it completely tosses out the notion that student-athletes are on campus to get an education," said McPherson. "All this stuff about branding, athletes finding their own brand — your brand is in the classroom, not in the locker room. Because there's a shelf life on your athletic career. There's not a shelf life on your education."
McPherson says the short-sighted ruling is going to cause all sorts of headaches for players and coaches alike. He says the NCAA pushed through a nationwide policy because certain states were about to enact their own legislation removing restrictions on compensation, which would have created state-vs-state battles and all out chaos on the recruiting trail.
And it's going to be years before it all smoothes itself out.
"It's going to be ugly for a while," he said. "This is not a good solution. This is something that happened in the twelfth hour because of the state laws. So, I think there's going to be a lot of messes before there's improvement, and I do think it's going to cause a lot more headaches than solutions."
