A Jacksonville resident would like to see vacant lots give rise to community gardens across the city.

Michael Woods suggested the idea to City Council members as a way to grow edible produce locally and provide food and farming opportunities from unused spaces.

"We need to see our community lots, our vacant lots, turned into vibrant food sources," he said.

He told council members that each neighborhood could have its own miniature farm. He believes the initiative could serve as a model that could be used across the state, especially in urban settings.

Woods is working with state organizations to identify available resources.

"Urban agriculture should be in every incorporated community across the state," he said.

The Jacksonville Park Foundation is working with Woods about incorporating the idea into a plot of land at 641 Church St. The foundation supports parks and recreation in the city.

"We're working with the city to hopefully clear some of that land to get it into production-agriculture mode," he said.

Woods said he is also looking at land south of the site that could be used to create a bloom project, which would be used for cultivating flowers.
