Patrons from our community that have been badged to use the Idea Box makerspace can now come to Manitowoc Public Library and start creating!
The Idea Box is a makerspace in which you have the opportunity to pursue hands-on creation using various types of technology to which you might not otherwise have access. This equipment provides for a wide range of self-expression. You can modify clothes with the sewing machines, create objects with the 3D printer, and make unique pieces of art with our 3Doodler pens. And this is just the first wave of devices available within the Idea Box (more to come in the future!)
Once you are badged on a piece of equipment, you can come into MPL during regular library operating hours and reserve a time to use that equipment.
So, what’s “badging,” you ask? Being “badged” means that you have completed a training class at the Library on a particular device. Keep an eye on the Events Calendar on our website (www.manitowoclibrary.org) for these classes. Use the website to register for a spot in the class. These classes are FREE and typically run approximately 60 minutes. At the end of the tutorial, you will be asked to perform general tasks using the equipment. Once you pass the assessment, you will be “badged.”
These assessments are done so that you can use the equipment safely and independently. Walk-ins for badging are not offered. Regardless of someone’s familiarity with any of the devices—from beginners to experts—all patrons who wish to use the equipment must participate in a badging class to use anything within the Idea Box. If you are unable to attend a class or it is full, don’t worry! We’ll be making more classes available soon.
The Idea Box is intended for use by Teens and Adults. While anyone can enter the Idea Box, only those who have met the above requirements will be able to use the equipment within it. There is no cost to attend a badging session or to reserve Idea Box equipment. There is a charge, however, for the consumable materials that are used when operating these devices and the Library provides these for a nominal fee. A full list of equipment, instructional resources, classes, age requirements, and material costs are available on the following website: www.manitowoclibrary.org/services/idea-box-makerspace.
The Idea Box offers unlimited possibilities for creative expression. If you are interested in all that the Idea Box has to offer, sign up for a badging class and we’ll get you on your way to making something special!
I look forward to seeing what you create!
