Jorge Soler and Teoscar Hernández are among the right-field options on the free-agent market, so the Phillies could take the $20 million per year owed to Castellanos over the next three seasons to sign his replacement. Other players such as Boston’s Alex Verdugo could also be available in trades.
Castellanos was AWOL in the NLCS. He hit the solo home run in Game 1, then proceeded to go 0 for 20 in Games 2 through 7. Particularly excruciating was the 4th inning strikeout in Game 7 with runners on the corners, one out, and Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas on deck. The inability to tack on more runs there was a killer.
Before the NLCS, Nick was on fire. Nine hits in six games against Atlanta and Miami. Five home runs. He was super streaky and perhaps that’s what the Phillies are looking at here, assuming Feinsand’s report is true. Phillies fans seem to be in consensus that at least one lineup-altering move should be made, and Castellanos, who is inclined to swing at absolute bullshit outside of the zone, is a prime candidate. He’s got three years left at $20 million per, which will take him to age 34.
