Marvel rewrites Shira Haas’s Israeli character, dropping Mossad link - The Times of Israel

A new trailer released on Friday for Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” sparked renewed controversy over its inclusion of a new Israeli character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The superhero, played by Shira Haas of “Unorthodox,” first appeared in a 1980 edition of The Incredible Hulk. Ruth Bat-Seraph, also known by her alter ego Sabra, is a Mossad agent with superpowers that include super strength, enhanced speed, and the ability to heal people.

Throughout her appearances in various comics, Sabra is seen to hold negative views toward Arabic characters, both terrorists and civilians. While various aspects of her characterization change throughout her appearances, her loyalty to the Israeli government and Mossad remains strong.

Disney, which owns Marvel, announced Haas’s casting as Sabra in 2022, sparking controversy over its inclusion of an Israeli character who works for the Jewish state’s international intelligence agency. New calls to boycott the upcoming Captain America movie arose after the trailer was released and Haas’s appearance in it was confirmed.

However, according to Marvel’s trailer release announcement, Haas’s character has been rewritten as a former Black Widow (a member of a group of elite female assassins and spies) and a high-ranking US government official. The announcement names the character by her real name but makes no mention of the Sabra alias.

Haas has two appearances in the trailer without any lines. In the first, she appears to be sitting in an interrogation room, and in the second, she is seen walking with a gun raised.

Part of the controversy surrounding the character stemmed from her alias. While  a sabra is the fruit of a cactus and an Israeli term for Jews born in Israel, it is also the name of a Lebanese refugee camp where — in 1982, two years after the character’s first appearance in the comics — a Christian militia murdered hundreds of Palestinians while IDF troops stood by.

It is unclear how much, if any, of the character’s original Israeli background was included in the movie, but changes to the source material were expected after the studio said in a statement after the casting announcement that it would not stay entirely true to the comics.

“While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics, they are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience, and the filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago,” the statement said.

Calls to boycott the movie arose in 2022 when Haas’s character was first announced, and they remain strong amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
