Life in the public eye can be extremely difficult, especially when you are a new member of Britain’s royal family. Meghan Markle, the former American actress and now Duchess of Sussex, has experienced more than her fair share of ups and downs in the past several years, beginning with the revelation of her relationship with Prince Harry, to the troubled situation with certain relatives of hers.
Undoubtedly, Markle tries to stay grounded in any way that she can, including staying connected with her close friends and exploring her spirituality.
Is Meghan Markle religious?
While Meghan Markle was raised in the Episcopalian faith, she never publicly professed to any particular religion during her stint in Hollywood. However, her spirituality seemed to have blossomed once her relationship with Prince Harry got well underway. According to sources in a recent People article, Meghan Markle is deeply spiritual and leans on her faith in order to get through all of the tough times she has been forced to deal with lately.
Although Markle was baptized into the Church of England, the official religion of the royal family, in advance of her wedding to Prince Harry, the same sources admit that she has always had a “very close relationship with God.” Supposedly, Markle prays every day and is very grounded in the idea that she cannot control everything that happens in life.
What is the royal family’s religion?
In March 2018, Meghan Markle made Prince Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, very happy when she was officially baptized into the Church of England. The secret ceremony was done completely under the radar but was attended by most of the royal family, including Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Although some saw this as a radical move, and a drastic break away from the American traditions that Markle had been raised in, she was actually following the precedent set by her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.
Prior to her marriage to Prince William in 2011, Kate Middleton was also confirmed in the Church of England. While it is not known if this step is required before marriage to a royal, it is likely just done as a gesture of respect to the Queen.
The Church of England is the long-standing traditional church of the royal family. It is a Protestant-Anglican church, founded on strict principles, and the royal family has been involved in it since the 1500s. It goes well beyond simply attending services though – Queen Elizabeth is heavily invested in church policy, and is in charge of appointing bishops, archbishops, deans, and deacons to serve in the church clergy.
What church do the royals attend?
Just like many American families, the royal family has a favorite church. For special occasions, including Christmas services, the royals attend the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene. The church, which was built in the 16th century, is full of beautiful decorative touches like Gothic arches, old-fashioned boxed pews, and historic artifacts.
The church even features an incredible jewel-encrusted Bible. In spite of many renovations and repairs over the years, it remains the Queen’s favorite church and the one where the family gathers to celebrate the church whenever they can.
Meghan Markle has a big year ahead of her – she and her husband are set to welcome their new baby in late April or early May, and will be back at work only a few short months later. Whether or not Markle will raise her baby to be as deeply spiritual as she remains to be seen, but the sense of calm and purpose that her religion grants her might help to make those difficult early years of parenting a bit easier.
