Movie producer Steve Bing, 'Polar Express' financier and ex to Elizabeth Hurley, dies at 55 - USA TODAY

Movie producer Steve Bing, best known as the financier behind films such as Tom Hanks' "The Polar Express" and for his relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley, has died at 55.

Hurley and their 18-year-old son, Damian, posted about Bing's death on their respective social media accounts Tuesday.

Hurley paid tribute to Bing, sharing a series of photos of them together on Instagram.

"I am saddened beyond belief that my ex Steve is no longer with us. It is a terrible end," she wrote. "Our time together was very happy and I’m posting these pictures because although we went through some tough times, it’s the good, wonderful memories of a sweet, kind man that matter. In the past year we had become close again. We last spoke on our son’s 18th birthday. This is devastating news and I thank everyone for their lovely messages"

Damian also posted to Instagram, thanking everyone for reaching out following the news of Bing's death.

"I’m trying to reply to as many of you as I can, but please know I will always remember your kindness," he continued. "This is a very strange and confusing time and I’m immensely grateful to be surrounded by my phenomenal family and friends."

USA TODAY has reached out to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Bing, the founder of Shangri-La Entertainment, was the grandson of real estate developer Leo S. Bing, the namesake of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Bing Theatre.

After dropping out of Stanford University, Bing's first executive producer credit came with the Sylvester Stallone film "Get Carter" (2000). In 2004, Variety reported Bing made "one of the boldest moves ever taken by an independent producer," investing close to $80 million in director Robert Zemeckis' Warner Bros. Christmas tentpole "The Polar Express." Bing covered half the production budget of the pioneering film that fully used digital capture technology, featuring Hanks providing multiple voices.

Bing financed films such as Zemeckis’ 2007 drama "Beowulf" and Martin Scorsese’s 2008 Rolling Stones documentary "Shine a Light." Other credits include "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World" (2005) and "Rock the Kasbah" (2015). His current project was a producing a documentary about Jerry Lee Lewis with T. Bone Burnett directing.

Bing’s screenwriting credits include work on the "Missing in Action" film franchise, TV's "Married ... With Children" and co-writing the 2003 comedy "Kangaroo Jack."

After an 18-month relationship starting in 2000, model/actress Hurley claimed her one-time beau Bing was the father of her unborn child in November 2001. A 2002 DNA test proved that Bing was the father and he agreed to pay what a release called a "generous provision," a total of $2.8 million, to support Damian Charles until he was 18. Damian is now an actor and model.

Bing also had a daughter, Kira Bonder, with former professional tennis player Lisa Bonder.

An influential political donor with ties to Bill Clinton, Bing provided the private jet that Clinton flew back from North Korea with journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee after the former president negotiated their freedom in 2009, according to The New York Times.

Bing was a philanthropist who pledged a $30 million legacy gift to the Motion Picture & Television Fund in 2012.

"For years Steve Bing has been one of the most philanthropic and generous people in our industry," Jeffrey Katzenberg, chairman of the MPTF Foundation, said in a statement at the time.
