AJ Styles Loses the WWE Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown - EssentiallySports

If you felt WWE would not have any surprises and play safe before SummerSlam, then you were wrong. AJ Styles vs Jeff Hardy for the Intercontinental Championship was probably the match of the night.

As advertised since last week, AJ Styles defended his Intercontinental Championship against Jeff Hardy this week on SmackDown. However, there was a little twist to the show.

When Retribution attacked Strowman, the whole roster came out to help him. During this whole chaos, Styles attacked Hardy from behind without the latter realizing and injuring his knee. A smart move indeed.

Throughout the show, Hardy would be in the medical room, being attended by a physio. However, being the daredevil he is, he would go out to fight AJ Styles with a knee brace on.

Styles took advantage of Hardy’s knee and dominated the match throughout. Hardy even slipped once due to his bad knee while attempting a whisper in the wind.

Surprisingly, when the Phenomenal One went for the Styles Clash, Hardy’s knee brace struck him in the face.

Hardy then followed it up with a twist of fate and his signature Swanton Bomb. Post that, he covered Styles for the three count and became a five-time Intercontinental champion.

What is the road ahead for Jeff Hardy after beating AJ Styles?

We all know that since it’s inception, AEW has tried to lure many WWE superstars to their roster. There are a few mainstays on the Tony Khan Show like Jon Moxley (Dean Ambrose), Chris Jericho, and Brodie Lee.

There were many WWE superstars who were rumored to leave for AEW. Edge and Randy Orton were rumored to leave but stayed as the boss offered them big-money deals.

After weeks of speculation, this week Rey Mysterio signed a deal with WWE and will be in his son’s corner at WWE SummerSlam.

As for Jeff Hardy, in April there were rumors of him going to AEW. However, Vince McMahon promised Hardy a big push and as of this moment, Vinnie Mac has delivered.

Another exciting revelation made by Jeff Hardy’s wife Beth is that when live crowds return, Jeff will return with his loved No More words theme song.

SummerSlam is live this Sunday on the WWE Network and as of this moment, there is no confirmed news if Jeff Hardy will be defending his Intercontinental Championship.
