BTS’s new single “Dynamite” is living up to its name in its first week of release. The boy band’s first all-English track is blowing up records left and right, and it is expected to explode to No. 1 on next week’s Billboard Hot 100, according to Chart Data.
It was clear from the “Dynamite” pre-release promo that BTS would be making a bid for No. 1 on the Hot 100 with their latest single, which received a massive nationwide radio push and multiple remixes in its first week. A No. 1 debut on the Hot 100 would make history on multiple fronts, giving BTS their first No. 1 hit (they previously peaked at No. 4 with “On” earlier this year) and making them the first Korean act to ever top the Hot 100. (Psy previously reached No. 2 with his ultra-viral 2012 hit “Gangnam Style.”)
Early metrics across multiple platforms all point to a monstrous debut for “Dynamite.” The song’s accompanying music video broke the YouTube premiere record, drawing over 3 million concurrent viewers, and the 24-hour debut record, racking up a whopping 101.1 million views in its first day. “Dynamite” has now earned over 210 million views through its first five days, making it the fastest music video in history to eclipse 200 million views.
BTS’s new single also got off to a stellar streaming start. “Dynamite” topped the global Spotify chart with 7.778 million first-day streams, giving it the biggest global debut of 2020, surpassing Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” (7.742 million). That includes 1.824 million U.S. streams, good for a No. 3 stateside debut. (By comparison, BTS’s Top 10 Halsey collaboration “Boy with Luv” earned 1.314 million U.S. streams in its first day, while both versions of “On” earned a combined 1.408 million streams.) The song has held steady in Spotify’s Top 5 both globally and stateside, earning over a million U.S. streams per day.
“Dynamite” has also posted a remarkable performance at Top 40 radio, earning over 1,000 spins in its first day, according to HITS Daily Double. That’s a career best for the group, surpassing “Boy with Luv”—which, again, had the benefit of a major Western pop star feature. Per Billboard, “Dynamite” also gave BTS their best debut on the Pop Songs Radio Airplay chart, launching at No. 30 with 2,301 plays in its first three days and once again leapfrogging over “Boy with Luv” (No. 35 with 1,230 plays).
These rosy early metrics for “Dynamite” don’t even account for traditional sales, which have always been BTS’s bread and butter. Limited edition “Dynamite” vinyl and cassettes sold out online numerous times, and the song quickly launched to No. 1 on iTunes in the U.S. and around the world upon its release. As of yesterday, BTS claimed the top four spots on the U.S. iTunes chart with four different versions of “Dynamite”: the original, the instrumental, and the newly-released acoustic and EDM remixes.
Tally up all of these successes in the radio, streaming and sales departments, and BTS seems poised to make history yet again with “Dynamite.” When the Billboard Hot 100 refreshes next week, the superstar septet could very well rule the roost.
