To the Editor:
A reply to Mr. Dollinger’s letter proposing a new Civil War statue: Statues should not be torn down. Statues are like art. They convey a certain meaning to the artist and display the skill of the sculptor. People who view a statue will interpret it in their own way.
Statues in and of themselves are not offensive. What is offensive is the intolerance and hate shown by those who tear them down.
You proposed as a symbol of unity a statue of a black soldier and a white soldier standing together. I would suggest that the 29th Illinois Colored Infantry Regiment and one of the local regiments might be appropriate to honor those from Illinois who fought for the Union.
