BTS Week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: Watch Every Performance - Teen Vogue

It's BTS Week at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and that means five days worth of celebrations for ARMY.

The seven-member Korean group kicked off their takeover of the late-night show on Monday, September 28. As many longtime fans noticed, they were prepared to show new and old ARMY alike the full spectrum of their intricate, energetic performance style. And the timing couldn't have been more appropriate: recent single “Dynamite” just climbed back atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Early on in the first show, the members of BTS — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — performed a fresh version of “Dynamite” with a cappella accompaniment from Jimmy and famed house band The Roots. BTS rocked their bright, clean-cut, ‘70s-infused “Dynamite” looks in the performance, which featured Jimmy attempting the iconic kick move. (It didn’t go well.)

To close the first night, BTS was reborn into an older era with a rendition of their 2018 hit “Idol," held at Seoul's Gyeongbokgung Palace, Consequence of Sound noted. The musicians wore modernized hanboks in a variety of dark shades, and the nighttime glow of the palace gave the performance an ethereal, cinematic feel. The song itself was a significant choice — BTS previously performed “Idol” on Jimmy's show back in 2018, a U.S. press run that would see them perform on America's Got Talent, Good Morning America, and more. At the time, they were the first Korean group to perform on GMA, per Billboard. Now, of course, BTS are regulars on American television, enough to get an entire week on late-night TV following their epic Tonight Show takeover for Map of the Soul: 7 back in February.

Lyrically, “Idol” encompasses so much of BTS's past, present, and future. The song references another 2018 track, “Anpanman," as well as the ongoing themes of loving yourself no matter what. (If you want to read more about the meaning behind the sounds in “Idol,” check out translator DoYou Bangtan's analysis here.) The opening lines posit that BTS doesn't really care if you see them as a group of idols or a group of artists — they're both, and so the artistry of their music coexists with the glamour. The industry-savvy coexists with the authenticity of their work. The effort coexists with what looks effortless.

There's immense range in “Dynamite” and “Idol," and we can't wait to see what BTS has to show off the rest of this week.
