FOND DU LAC - The Fond du Lac Public Library Idea Studio will reopen Sept. 8 with events planned throughout September.
The studio closed in March and parts of the downtown library began reopening in June. It will open through online project setup/consultation and pickup for 3D printing, sublimation printing of masks and mugs, and button-making. Patrons now can schedule an online setup session with staff, and they can pick up and pay for a project when it is ready. Previous training to use this service is not required.
"Over the last several years, we've had countless people take advantage of everything from our printmaking press to our sewing machine to even our kitchen as they enjoy the act of 'making'," said Joshua Cowles, library technology coordinator. "During that time, it's also enabled a special kind of interaction and opportunity to learn between these creators."
The studio will also offer limited, in-person appointments for use of the recording studio, laser cutter, Carvey CNC and printmaking press. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Some equipment use will be limited. 3D printers are not available for in-person use and the recording studio station will be set up for editing only and patrons must bring their own earbuds/headphones.
Idea Studio's upcoming events include:
- Idea Studio Happy Hour, 7 p.m., Sept. 10, on Zoom. Catch up with fellow makers and Idea Studio staff, share your projects, ideas and resources, and help guide the next phases of Idea Studio reopening. Held the second Thursday of each month.
- Silhouette Cameo Showcase - Scrapbook Edition, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 14 on Zoom. Learn about the ways a Silhouette Cameo vinyl/paper cutter can be used in scrapbooking. Registration required at fdlpl.org, click “Calendar.”
- Design a Clock Face, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22 on Zoom. Learn how to create projects for the Carvey CNC router by making a 2-color clock face design using online software. Completed designs will be cut by Idea Studio staff and can be combined with an inexpensive clock movement. Registration required at fdlpl.org, click “Calendar.”
September Saturday Maker Marathons are also set for 1 p.m. on each Saturday. The Idea Studio will premier recorded workshops from its summer makers-in-residence on Facebook at facebook.com/ideastudioFDLPL

This is a limited reopening, and people will not be allowed to use the studio in groups at a time.
Staff are wearing face masks and extra sanitization is being done as well to ensure patrons' safety. Virtual training and programs will continue to be offered.
"We're excited to be able to be able to bring back additional services that benefit the Fond du Lac area," Cowles said. "The library is an important place that brings people in the community together, and while we need to exercise caution in how we reopen, it's important to be able to support the community during what has been a difficult time for everyone."
