Coming into SmackDown, WWE fans knew that Roman Reigns would both address the crowd and learn who the first challenger would be for his universal championship. There was no way, however, to predict that Reigns would be lined up to face a member of his family at Clash of Champions on Sept. 27. That's exactly what happened when Jey Uso subbed into the fatal four-way to crown a No. 1 contender after Big E was taken out by Sheamus earlier in the show.
That was not the only big angle on the show. The long-teased break-up of Sasha Banks and Bayley was finally executed when Bayley brutally turned on her best friend following a loss in a rematch with Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler for the women's tag team championships.

Jey Uso punches his ticket to showdown with Roman Reigns
Reigns opened the show in the ring with new advocate Paul Heyman. Heyman said that he did not corrupt Reigns, it was the reverse when Reigns saved him from having been cast aside. Reigns did so, Heyman said, because Reigns was cast aside in the same way he was, with no appreciation from the WWE and the fanbase. Heyman also isolated "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman were not worthy men to carry the promotion in his absence before saying that there would be a four-way for a title shot at Clash of Champions, because everything under Reigns' rule is going to be bigger and badder -- so there had to be one more man in the match than Raw's triple threat to crown a contender for the WWE championship. Reigns, who had been standing by staring intensely into the camera, took the microphone and said, "This is my island, and when you have this kind of power, all you have to do is show up and win."
Reigns ran into Jey Uso backstage, saying he hadn't returned his calls because he'd been busy and then told Heyman it was alright to go. Uso asked what the deal with Heyman was, only to be told everything was under control before blowing off Uso's offer to watch his back if needed.
Jey Uso def. Sheamus, King Corbin and Matt Riddle via pinfall after hitting Riddle with a Uso Splash. Earlier in the show, Big E had been attacked backstage by Sheamus before using White Noise to put him through a car windshield. This led to Uso replacing Big E in the match. As expected, the match was chaotic, with a big moment where Corbin threw Uso over a row of ThunderDome screens. Riddle hit Sheamus with Bro 2 Sleep, hit Corbin with a Floating Bro, but Uso flew in to hit Riddle with a Uso Splash to score the pin and secure the title shot.
The Heyman and Reigns promo to open the show was wonderfully intense and helped to set up the how and why of the shocking partnership, the Sheamus attack on Big E was perfect levels of intense and Uso getting the win was a near-perfect twist on all expectations coming into the night. There are few times where a WWE story that runs through an entire show plays out perfectly. Add to that Uso being a unique and intriguing challenger for Reigns and you have a very solid show-long story. Given the next big angle on the show featured a better match, I have to dock this a tiny bit via comparison. Grade: A
Bayley turns on Sasha Banks
Women's Tag Team Championship -- Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler def. Bayley & Sasha Banks via pinfall after Jax hit a cross body on both women. Banks had her knee brutally attacked by Baszler during the match but the challengers stayed strong until the end despite some mid-match communication issues. Banks was treated by medical staff after the match before yelling at them and forcing them to leave.
Bayley then turned on Banks, absolutely destroying her by throwing her into the ring post, ring steps and throughout the ring. Bayley continued to attack Banks' already-injured knee while yelling at the announce team, "Is it Banks Time?" But it was the finish of the turn that took things to the next level, with Bayley first trying to wrap a chair around Banks' knee for a stomp before instead wrapping the chair around her head and neck and delivering a stomp from the second rope before walking out on her best friend.
For starters, the match was outstanding, outpacing the Payback battle between the teams, which was already a really solid effort. But the turn was more than anyone could have asked. This was not a simple turn via attack angle, it was pure violence from Bayley. The fact that Bayley's attack was difficult to watch at times only served to make the whole segment even better. The length, brutality and ruthlessness of Bayley's assault was everything the two needed to build to their long-awaited feud. Grade: A+
What else happened on SmackDown?
Heavy Machinery def. The Miz & John Morrison via pinfall after Otis hit a Vader Bomb on The Miz. After the match, Morrison stole Otis' Money in the Bank briefcase. Otis later revealed that he actually keeps the Money in the Bank contract in his lunchbox, while Morrison opened the briefcase to find office supplies and a sandwich. Simple stuff, but Otis needed to get something going since he's been mostly in the background since winning MitB.
Sami Zayn was the last man standing in a confrontation with Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles. Zayn again claimed to be the true intercontinental champion when he was interrupted by Hardy who was, in turn, interrupted by Styles. Mayhem broke out before Hardy hit the Twist of Fate on Styles and Zayn hit Styles with a Helluva Kick and ran from the ring.
Bray Wyatt hosted a new edition of the Firefly Fun House. Wyatt said he's sure everyone is currently down in the dumps because The Fiend lost his favorite toy, but said a new friend will join the Fun House next week.
