Breaking Down ENHYPEN’s Massive K-Pop Debut After 1 Month - Forbes

A new boy band is swiftly impacting the K-pop scene and while they’re part of the same label family as BTS and finding a similarly globally excited fanbase, this group is proving in just a month to be blazing a path all their own.

ENHYPEN is the seven-member male group created under Belift Lab, a joint venture between superlabel Big Hit Entertainment and Korean-entertainment conglomerate CJ ENM, that was created on the boy-band singing competition I-Land before releasing their debut EP on November 30. The group’s Border: Day One album, as well as its lead single “Given-Taken,” is meant to represent the septet moving on to the border of new worlds, transforming from K-pop trainees to idols, and the complex emotions attached to these changes.

In just one day, fans clearly set out to show that the message resonated with them when Border: Day One sold more than 318,000 physical album copies thanks to huge pre-orders and day-of interest. On South Korea’s Gaon Albums chart’s monthly recap, Border: Day One was the second-biggest selling album of November 2020 only behind, you guessed it, BTS and their BE album that was a chart-topping success around the world. Even with their small window for sales, ENHYPEN surpassed several established major-sellers and instantly became one of 2020’s best-selling new artists.

American fans also showed early love to ENHYPEN with Border: Day One able to debut on Billboard’s World Albums chart (the only K-pop newcomer to enter this chart this year) while “Given-Taken” entered the World Digital Song Sales chart (one of only four newly debuted K-pop groups able to do so). Just like label mates BTS and Tomorrow X Together, ENHYPEN seems to have a strong stateside presence of fans from the beginning who are willing to support their music both digitally and via streaming as seen by the strong chart performance so far.

In the month since their debut, ENHYPEN has been able to light up a handful of major stages in Korea including a performance on the highly anticipated Mnet Asian Music Awards and accepting one of the Next Leader awards at The Fact Music Awards. The group has snagged a slew of early international media looks as well by not only securing interviews with mainstream outlets but also showing that their millions of social-media followers are eager for new content (a video interview with Seventeen magazine has earned more than 315,000 views, and counting, in its first 24 hours).

ENHYPEN’s big month culminated in performing alongside their seniors at the 2021 New Year’s Eve Live concert festival that featured Big Hit Label artists like BTS, Tomorrow X Together, NU’EST, GFriend and more. The group not only got to perform three songs—including new single “Let Me In (20 Cube)”—but also show new sides of themselves integrated into their larger label family. Leader Jungwon stood alongside other Big Hit group leaders like NU'EST's JR, BTS’ RM and GFriend’s Sowon, and dancer-rapper Jay performed a special cover song alongside NU’EST’s Ren and TXT’s Huening Kai, plus main vocalist Heeseung took part in a performance of Shin Hae-chul’s Korean hit “To You” with producer-singer Bumzu, NU’EST’s Baekho, GFriend’s Yuju and TXT’s Taehyun.

Despite big shoes to fill as the latest Big Hit act, ENHYPEN has already begun proving themselves with big sales and big performances. While groups created from singing competitions tend to have a tough time keeping up the momentum from their start, all signs indicate that ENHYPEN’s giving fans exactly what they want and they’re on the path to take that far.
