In a shockingly divisive choice, internet YouTuber PewDiePie has won the number one spot for the "Most Handsome Face of 2020." The list was created by the publication "TC Candler & The Independent Critics," which has been creating this list in magazines since 1990, only recently transitioning to YouTube as well.
The list comprises of male megastars, young celebrities, and rising stars from a wide variety of platforms around the globe, such as Timothee Chalamet and Henry Cavill. The goal of the list is to inform the public and showcase the modern ideals of worldwide beauty. In total, there were over a million public nominations that had to be counted out of 135,000 celebrities, narrowing down to 100 final nominations.
Out of all the celebrities, many fans were ecstatic to see that PewDiePie was given the top position over a number of actors and musicians, congratulating him with tweets of fan art and memes. However, many other fanbases were upset that PewDiePie was placed higher over their own personal favorites, specifically members of the popular Korean boyband BTS.
With 8 billion social media impressions and around 2 billion likes, many people give TC Candler & The Independent Critic's list a lot of credibility. So after PewDiePie was given his Hall of Fame nomination, he began trending on social media platforms either out of respect from fans or disgust from haters. But as the old saying goes, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Many fans who have been paying attention to PewDiePie's placement from the previous lists should not be surprised. PewDiePie has moved up from 18th place in 2016, to 4th place in 2018, and finally second place last year right under the K-pop star Jungkook. Sadly, this did not stop K-pop fans from heading to Twitter and showcasing side by side pictures of BTS members stating how they felt the list was rigged. Some even went as far as to demand TC Candler & The Independent Critics to do a recount of the votes.
The majority of the BTS boyband singers have been placed on the list, with popular vocalist Kim Tae-Hyung placing second right under PewDiePie. So many BTS fans could view this as an honor that many of the members are so widely loved since many other notable celebrities did not even make it on the list. If anything, this award does not merit cyberbullying towards either side for any reason. Hopefully, PewDiePie accepts this award graciously, and people can learn to be happy for him.
