Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don’t.
That old candy bar jingle from over four decades ago, says Old Town Brewing founder Adam Milne, is the concept behind Friday’s release of an innovative collaboration between his brewery and Northeast Portland’s Level Beer: Make a clear IPA and a hazy IPA from the same recipe but use different yeasts -- one of the main factors in making a beer “hazy” or clear. Then sell the two beers together in a mixed four-pack.
Level has made the hazy, and Old Town has made the clear – or West Coast – IPA. The beers beginning today are available at the breweries’ pubs, then distribution begins to grocery stores and bottle shops in a different approach to packaging: four-packs that feature two 16-oz. cans of the clear and two cans of the hazy.
“I’m almost 50, so I was thinking back to my childhood about Almond Joy and Mounds,” Milne says. “And that’s the idea: do you want clean or do you want hazy? Some people like both, but not everybody. We thought we’d go off that juxtaposition, the yin and yang, and let them decide.”
That yin and yang theme plays out on the cans’ look, created by Jordan Wilson Designs, says Milne, whose brewery has locations in North and Northwest Portland. Level’s hazy comes in a black and gray can and represents the yin – or dark half of the ancient Chinese concept – while Old Town’s clear comes in reverse -- white and gray, representing the light half of the duality.

Milne says the collaboration evolved from the two breweries’ desire to work together, which produced a brainstorming session that landed on the concept. The malts and hops -- Meridian, Mosaic and Southern Passion – are the same, but Level’s Hazy IPA employs a yeast that produces the style’s trademark softer bitterness, creamy mouthfeel and juicier flavors. Old Town’s Clear IPA uses a yeast that helps deliver the more traditional West Coast style’s sharper bitterness and big flavor.
“I think it’s going to be exciting,” said Spyros Kollias Jr., Level’s sales manager. “I have a feeling it’s going to be pretty popular in the market, now that the holidays are coming.
“The main thing was having a four-pack that still is in the IPA umbrella but has the hazy and the West Coast,” he continued. “That gives the customer the opportunity to try the same recipe from two different breweries but different styles.”
