Mnet’s upcoming idol competition show Kingdom is set to premiere on Thursday, April 1st. However, before its first episode, the show is already embroiled in controversy. Read on to find out all the details.
K-Pop fans love a good competition show, especially after Mnet formed popular groups such as Wanna One, IOI and IZ*ONE. However, these huge idol shows are no stranger to scandals.
All four ‘Produce 101’ series were subject to vote manipulation, where some participants were unfairly eliminated. As a result, producing director Ahn Joon-young was sentenced to two years of imprisonment and fined ₩37 million, along with several other staff.
Now, Mnet’s upcoming idol competition has been accused of treating their contestants unfairly, thus affecting the quality of their performances.

Kingdom: Legendary War
Kingdom: Legendary War follows its hit predecessors, Queendom and Road to Kingdom. The premise of the show is idol groups battling it out to prove that they are the best.
Legendary War is a sequel to 2020’s Road to Kingdom, which followed seven ‘lesser-known’ groups, in an attempt to showcase their potential and gain popularity. The Boyz won and secured a place on Legendary War.
This year, The Boyz will be up against bigger groups: BtoB, Stray Kids, SF9, Ateez and iKon.
Mnet Kingdom controversy – drama explained!
The first episode hasn’t even aired yet but Mnet have been caught in a sticky situation.
Korean news site Ilgan Sports reported that some groups received a larger stage production budget. The limit was ₩5 million (approx. £3,190 GBP /$4,412 USD), but particular groups were said to have had a more elaborate stage.

Ilgan states that recording for the first ‘hit song’ episode last month was stopped halfway after stage differences became obvious. Management companies at the site had to ask the production crew to create a fair environment.
The show attempted to shut down the accusations by claiming that some props were from the groups’ past concerts. However, all the participating groups have had concert experiences before, thus prompting management to raise the issue with Mnet.
The official response from Mnet:
“As it was the first contest, we set the production cost to coordinate the stage of the 6 teams, but we are sorry for not taking into account the areas that could not be defined in detail, such as scope and availability.”
“After the first contest, the production team is taking the problem seriously in that part. However, for the best stage, the artist’s creative needs to be top priority, and the fact that all parts of the stage installation cannot be clearly presented as a guide is a cautious and distressing situation.
“The production crew of Kingdom is working closely with the six teams and the six teams in advance so that the artists can focus on the stage and create the best stage.”
“We will do our best to smoothly progress the competition that will follow in the future.”
According to JoyNews24, Mnet has released another statement claiming that the ₩5million budget was raised. However, only three out of the six groups were notified of the adjustment.
“As it was the first contest, we set the production cost to coordinate the stage of the 6 teams, but we are sorry for failing to consider areas that could not be defined in detail, such as scope and availability.”
The first episode will be airing on Thursday, April 1st, so check out if the stage difference is obvious!
