Black Panther 2's MCU Timeline Placement Confirmed - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever executive producer and Marvel Studios VP Nate Moore addressed confusion surrounding the film's place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.

During an interview with CinemaBlend, Moore was asked how the Black Panther sequel chronologically fits into the franchise. Initially expressing confusion, noting that he couldn't give the film a specific year, he did attempt to place it within the context of movies that occur within roughly the same time frame. "This movie clearly happens after No Way Home and Eternals," Moore explained. "I think it probably happens potentially concurrent with [Thor: Love and Thunder]. New Asgard does exist in our universe, for instance, or in our film. And almost concurrent with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is coming out in February."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was originally meant to heavily focus on the aftermath of "The Snap," the cataclysmic event which saw Thanos eliminate half the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Protagonist T'Challa would have been dealing with the consequences of the tragedy but the story was ultimately changed when actor Chadwick Boseman suddenly passed away in 2020. Wakanda Forever will similarly focus on the concept of loss and grief, a great deal of which is centered around the death of T'Challa.

After losing its protector, Wakanda is seemingly left defenseless and vulnerable as other countries attempt to take advantage of its momentary weakness. One such aggressor is seemingly Namor (Tenoch Huerta), the ruler of the undersea kingdom known as Talocan. Positioned as an anti-hero and antagonist, the Submariner will make his MCU debut in Wakanda Forever. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously insisted that he wanted to give Namor his own film for nearly two decades but explained the opportunity never arose.

Director Ryan Coogler knew during post-production of the original Black Panther that if a sequel were to be greenlit, he wanted to use Namor in the story. Effectively "calling dibs" on the character, the filmmaker wanted to ensure the opportunity to introduce the Submariner onscreen wasn't taken by another movie. "He was like, 'If we get so lucky, could we maybe, could I just raise my hand and make sure no one uses Namor?' And luckily, nobody was, and he had a great idea for it very early on," Moore explained. "So we started building towards that idea, which I think is really fun."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on Nov. 11.
