If there’s one thing to take away from Japanese design aesthetics, it’s the ease of layering, the deconstructed silhouettes that hint at a vague silhouette that looks rather chic. Uniqlo’s popular collaborations with designer labels is a practice that brings its tactile designs to an elevated standard. Now releasing the second collaboration with Marni, you can expect a perfect marriage—utilitarian boxy shirts, and workwear-inspired tailoring meets Marni’s arty and soulful flamboyance. You can find it in the textured knits, bias-cut dresses, and brightly coloured skirts that are hard to miss.
So how do these two polar opposites form a synergy? It’s Risso’s new bid to rediscover the language of the Milanese brand through the tech-clothing repertoire of Uniqlo. “The first Spring/Summer release was well-received globally and, still now, I see lots of people wearing it down the streets. In the previous case, we had developed a whole wardrobe for summer, tapping into the notion of ‘LifeWear’ at large. This time around, instead, we decided to address the collaboration more directionally, focusing on fewer categories and offering a Marni interpretation of Uniqlo’s ‘Heattech’,” says Francesco Risso creative director of Marni.
Typically, these one-off collections draw throngs at opening hours in front of Uniqlo stores, and it’s worth queueing for if you take a closer look at the goods on offer. The price points are not jacked up to match the high-end reputation of these designer names but are fairly mid-ranged matching the quality and the design language that is such a defining factor of the project. The Uniqlo x Marni collaboration will hit stores on the 16th of December in India bringing all the bright knits—the dopamine version really, of the Japanese brand’s muted offerings to the subcontinent.
