STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When Dom Provenzano and Gabriella Pappalardo were tasked with designing a T-shirt and sweatshirt logo that would proudly represent all of Staten Island’s many neighborhoods, the duo came up with a classic design.
“We were going to focus on individual neighborhoods, highlighting each one on a shirt, but there are far too many communities for that concept to succeed,” noted Provenzano, marketing and communications manager for the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, detailing more than five dozen areas that needed to be featured. “So, we decided to take the world tour approach.”
Screen-printed onto a soft black cotton background by Image Makers in Stapleton, the design is beautifully simplistic: A small, pocket-sized silhouette of the borough is featured on the front and a list of 58 neighborhoods is listed on the back -- similar to those concert T-shirts that list a famous rock band’s most monumental stops.
For Provenzano and Pappalardo, a marketing assistant with the Chamber, it was the perfect product to feature front and center on the organization’s locally focused e-commerce store.
“Shop Staten Island makes it easy for shoppers to browse and buy directly from small businesses in Staten Island,” Provenzano said. “We have everything on there, from food and beverage to apparel and accessories, even home décor. If you want to pick up something that is authentically Staten Island and support local stores, this is a great way to do it.”
Part of the national “Shop Where I Live” initiative that creates marketplace websites in partnership with chambers of commerce and economic development organizations to help local small businesses sell online together, creating a one-stop shop for their community to buy local, the concept is categorized by the motto “where Main Street meets the internet.” The program currently operates marketplace websites in 16 states with 38 different community site partners -- Staten Island being one of them.
“There are over 60 vendors on the site -- all mom-and-pop shops -- that sell very Staten Island-specific items,” noted Linda Baran, president and CEO of the Chamber. “Any business can sell here for free, and with free shipping being offered by Amazon until the end of the year, it really is a great tool for small businesses to use this holiday season.”
Dubbed Small Business Holiday Express, the site’s Amazon partnership represents a very modern version of Small Business Saturday, putting Staten Island-centric goods in the hands of borough consumers who don’t have to leave their living room to shop local.
On the site, shoppers can find handcrafted Staten Island Christmas ornaments, coasters and soaps, plus Ferry-themed mugs and a range of locally made accessories. Want a pound of rainbow cookies from the Cake Chef or a case of Flagship Brewery beer? You can find that on the online marketplace too.
Cultural institutions like the Staten Island Museum and Casa Belvedere, also sell on the site and Celebrate @ Snug Harbor sells gift tins, gourmet fruit and cheese boxes and more. You can even purchase collectibles from Hypno-Tronic Comics and homemade mozzarella from Novelli’s Pork Store in Oakwood.
All Staten Island small businesses can list products on Shop Staten Island for free.
