Most songs, even the most popular ones from the biggest stars in the world, begin to decline in consumption in the U.S. after just a few weeks. That’s almost always how the charts work...but apparently not when it comes to BTS.
Almost two months into its time on the Billboard charts, BTS’s latest single is starting to slow down on a handful of weekly tallies, but it’s holding steady on many others and even gaining ground on one important list. By improving even slightly this time around, the tune has reached an important high and made history in the meantime.
BTS’s “Butter” advances on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart this time around, the company’s weekly ranking of the tracks that reach the largest audience on top 40/mainstream pop stations across the country. The summery smash steps up from No. 11 to No. 10, officially entering the top 10 for the first time.
By breaking into the highest tier on the Pop Airplay tally, “Butter” has become the very rare top 10 smash from a South Korean artist. To date, only two names from that part of the world have scored a win that places between Nos. 1 and 10 for even a single week on that specific list, and BTS have now managed to become the first act to land in the region more than once.
“Butter” is BTS’s second top 10 hit on the Pop Airplay chart, an accumulation no other South Korean act in the ranking’s history has managed. They first reached the uppermost area last year with their first all-English giant “Dynamite.” That cut eventually climbed all the way to No. 5, and it stands as the highest-charting release by a musical act from the Asian territory.
Only one other tune by a South Korean artist, Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” has also become popular enough in America to rise into the top 10 on the Pop Airplay list. That viral sensation danced its way to No. 10 almost a decade ago, breaking many barriers at the time by doing so.
At the rate “Butter” is improving its best placement, it could easily continue to climb in the coming week. In fact, before it turns around and starts falling back down the Pop Airplay chart, it could tie, or even pass, “Dynamite.”
As it continues to do well on pop radio, “Butter'' also ranks as the bestselling song in America for yet another week. All those spins on radio stations and purchases have helped the cut remain at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for a seventh consecutive frame.
