Packers coach Matt LaFleur downplays idea of 'trap game' vs. Washington - NBC Sports

Sunday's clash between the Washington Football Team and Green Bay Packers is a matchup between two clubs heading in opposite directions.

Green Bay, losers in Week 1 to the New Orleans Saints, has won five straight games -- including victories over the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers -- and are near the top of the NFC. On the other hand is Washington, a club that has dropped two straight and has statistically one of the league's worst defenses.

Yet, despite the fact that Green Bay is expected to win comfortably over Washington at Lambeau Field this weekend, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur significantly downplayed the idea of Sunday's matchup being a "trap game" for his club.

"You can't take anything for granted in this league," LaFleur said Wednesday. "I think this is a really good football team that we're about to play."

Last week against Kansas City, Washington actually led at the halftime break before falling apart in the second half. LaFleur cited the Burgundy and Gold's success in the first 30 minutes against the Chiefs as a reason his team can't let up against Washington this Sunday.

"All you have to do is look at what they were able to do, and I know there's 60 minutes to a game, but they're beating KC [Kansas City] 13-10 at the half," LaFLeur said. "Just look at the roster, there's talent up and down on both sides of the ball."

In fairness, it would be easy for the Packers to overlook Washington considering Green Bay's upcoming schedule. The Packers have a short week upcoming with a trip to Arizona to face the undefeated Cardinals, only to be followed by a home date with the back-to-back AFC champion Chiefs.

But LaFleur, who coached in Washington for four seasons from 2010-2013 under Mike Shanahan, knows that if his team were to take Washington for granted, things could head south quickly for the NFC North leaders.

"We've got to prepare like we do every week. Our sole focus is on Washington," LaFleur said. "Every game is a challenge in this league. Most of these games are decided by a couple plays. So, if you have your focus anywhere else, you're going to get beat."
