One Piece’s live-action adaptation became the top TV series in 84 countries just days after its August 31 release. The Netflix series did justice to Eiichiro Oda’s original manga and anime, also giving old fans so much. No doubt the sheer credit goes to its accuracy and pacing.
The live-action adaptation has captured the unique characteristics of the original anime. It has even given limelight to some of the characters which were not much seen in the anime. If you’re a fan of the One Piece anime and manga, you know that Luffy’s grandfather, Garp, doesn’t play a big role in the early chapters. And everyone got to see more of him as a Marine officer much later in the story.
But in the One Piece live-action series, Garp takes on a more central role, even appearing at Roger’s execution. This is a scene which is not in the original anime or manga.
One Piece Creator Eiichiro Oda Was Hesitant About Garp’s Role in Live-Action
In the live-action adaptation, Garp is portrayed as a looming threat who’s always after the Straw Hat crew. This change sparked mixed reactions, particularly among devoted One Piece fans in online communities.
Now, looks like Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, also had reservations about giving Garp a major role in the live-action adaptation. Steven Maeda, a key figure behind the series, shared this insight in an interview with Screen Rant about Oda’s hesitancy by saying:
“There were a couple of things that took some persuading, and if there is something that Oda san was really unhappy with, we found a way to change it. But there are some things that we tried and got into the show that initially he was gun-shy about. One of them was bringing up Garp as more of a present character in the first eight episodes.”
Nevertheless, the above statement shows Oda’s desire to remain true to his creation.
Why Garp’s Character in One Piece Live Adaptation Wasn’t Well Received By The Fans?
Garp is one of the most important characters in the entire saga. If you want to understand the complexities of One Piece, his past life and world view is equally important.
Even though he was given enough screen time in the One-Piece live adaptation, some fans didn’t receive it well. Many feel that the focus on Garp’s storyline in the live-action series could have been better spent developing other characters like Usopp or including fan favorites who were left out of the adaptation.
The main concern that fans have with Garp’s expanded role in the live-action series is the early revelation that he is Luffy’s paternal grandfather (though their relationship is far from a smooth one).
More than that in the series, Monkey D. Garp’s actions are seen as antagonistic (which is not his actual portrayal of the anime or manga). Obviously, he’s stubborn, yes, but not criminal or cruel.
