Netflix's One Piece Star Iñaki Godoy Ranks His Most Challenging Scenes in the Series - CBR - Comic Book Resources

One Piece's breakout star Iñaki Godoy reveals the one scene he found most challenging to pull off in the series.

Godoy's earnest energy playing Monkey D. Luffy in Netflix's One Piece was evident and contagious. The actor evoked the same enthusiasm in a Teen Vogue interview, where he expressed his commitment to the role in detail. He was candid on a handful of scenes he found challenging to do, though, and he singled out one that helped establish the character fans of the anime are endeared to. Episode 1 "Romance Dawn" saw Luffy and Koby (played by Morgan Davies) jumping Alvida's ship and adrift on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. In that scene, the predicament had both characters making sense of their motivations by talking about their dreams.

"I think for me, the hardest thing to film... I had this one scene with Koby in a dinghy, where we're talking about dreams and that he wants to be a Marine," Godoy confessed. "That scene particularly, it was one of my first scenes that I filmed." He said he was able to dig deep into Luffy's values at that moment, which in a way helped set the tone of his character arc. That sequence also pitted both characters' ambitions on opposite sides of the law, which added tension to their conversation.

A Nuanced Take on Luffy

"It was a very important scene because Luffy's all about dreams. So I knew I had to get this scene right," Godoy shared, referring to his character's defining motivations. "This is what the character is all about. And there are a lot of things that I did in that scene at the beginning that I changed. I did rehearsals for that scene with my director, and I think it worked out pretty well. But it definitely was a process, getting to that point of, oh, like, there's this side of Luffy that... he is very kind and nice. He's not just a ball of energy. He's a ball of energy who listens."

Godoy also noted a couple of physically demanding scenes that were easier by comparison. "I have never filmed a scene in the sky. Or when I filmed underwater, that was also really wild," he confessed, also admitting he was up for the challenge. "I would open my eyes and there will be divers with cameras filming me! And I have to act! Underwater. Oh wow, that was something new! The underwater scene was pretty hard, physically, because the water was freezing. But that was not the hardest scene to film." Godoy embodying Luffy's sensitivity and sense of adventure confirms the actor is perfect for the part.

Season 1 of One Piece is now streaming on Netflix.
