Kim Kardashian's Sweet Birthday Photo of Baby Stormi Is Causing Some Backlash - The Cheat Sheet

Kim Kardashian shared an adorable photo of her niece Stormi Webster on Instagram Friday. In the post, she wished baby Stormi, who turned 1 on February 1, a happy birthday and called her the “sweetest baby girl.”

The picture shows Stormi and Kim’s daughter Chicago in matching pink baby walkers. Unsurprisingly, most comments on the post touched on how cute both girls were and how they looked like sisters. Chicago and Stormi are very close in age, with Chicago celebrating her first birthday just two weeks before her younger cousin. But a few people found reason to criticize the seemingly innocuous post.

Some people thought Kim was putting her daughter first

A few people thought Kim’s photo focused too much on her own daughter and not enough on Stormi.

“Stormi’s [face] is somewhat blocked and she’s not even looming at camera. Sad. Even if Kylie doesn’t mind it’s selfish on Kim’s end,” wrote one. “That’s not how you pay tribute to your own sister’s baby,” wrote another.

Kim’s supporters pointed out that Kylie didn’t even acknowledge Chicago’s birthday on social media. “Oh well…Kylie didn’t even post ANYTHING about Chicago’s birthday so I would have done the same thing Kim did,” one person wrote.

Others were worried for Chicago and Stormi’s safety

A few people also pointed out what they saw as unsafe parenting on the part of Kim and Kylie.

“Low key stresses me out how no one has said anything about walkers like these being extremely unsafe and recommended against by all pediatricians with a license to practice,” wrote one person.

Other people echoed the comment. “Walkers are pretty bad,” one pointed out. “Those walkers are illegal in Canada,” said another. One person summed up the scene in the photo as “super dangerous!”

Are baby walkers safe?

The critics aren’t totally off base with their callouts. The American Academy of Pediatrics has called for a ban on infant walkers. Babies may fall down stairs, fall out of the walker, or gain easier access to dangerous objects while using the devices, the organization noted.

The AAP said that walker-related injuries have declined due to tougher safety standards and the fact that fewer parents are using them. In 2014, about 2,000 children ended up in the emergency room due to injuries from using a walker. That’s down from more than 20,000 such injuries in 1990. Still, the medical association says it would be safer if they weren’t sold at all. Infant walkers have been banned in Canada since 2004.

Instead of a walker with wheels, the Mayo Clinic recommends that parents use a stationary play or activity center. These look like walkers, but don’t move around. Instead, the baby can bounce up and down and rotate in their seat. “They will allow your baby to play safely as he or she learns to walk,” Mayo noted.

As for Stormi’s mom Kylie, she seems to be thrilled to be celebrating her little girl’s first birthday.

“How did I get so lucky to have such a sweet, smart, happy baby,” she wrote on Instagram. “I just couldn’t have dreamt you up, storm. I wish you could stay this little forever and I could protect that contagious smile and laugh of yours.”
