In light of recent anti-abortion legislation in Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky and Ohio, Milla Jovovich candidly spoke about terminating a pregnancy two years ago, after she went into pre-term labor.
The actress, who was four-and-a-half months pregnant and shooting on location in Eastern Europe at the time, says she was awake during the procedure and called it “one of the most horrific experiences I have ever gone through.”
“Abortion is a nightmare at its best. No woman wants to go through that. But we have to fight to make sure our rights are preserved to obtain a safe one if we need to,” she wrote on Instagram. “I never wanted to speak about this experience. But I cannot remain silent when so much is at stake.”
Afterward, Jovovich, 43, says she spiraled “into one of the worst depressions of my life and had to work extremely hard to find my way out,” taking time off from her career and isolating herself from the world — all while maintaining a “strong face” for her two daughters, 11-year-old Ever and 4-year-old Dashiel, with director husband Paul W.S. Anderson.
Jovovich says she slowly found her way out of her “personal hell” by gardening, eating well and going to the gym daily, and without taking medication.
Busy Philipps and Jameela Jamil are among the stars who have also spoken publicly about their own abortions in light of the anti-abortion legislation. Alyssa Milano, meanwhile, called for a “sex strike,” tweeting, “Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy.”
