Fans from across the globe tuned in to watch a live concert by SuperM this Sunday (April 26), with over 75,000 paid viewers tuning into the first in a series of upcoming livestream-only K-pop concert events.
South Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment and media powerhouse Naver teamed up to launch the Beyond Live concert streaming service earlier this month, and the Sunday concert, which took place at 3PM in South Korea, or 2AM on the east coast of the United States, was the first in a series of four currently-planned concerts to take place in April and May as an alternative to traditional live events in the face of the global spread of the coronavirus leading to social distancing across many regions.
With over 75,000 paid viewers checking out the event from 109 countries, the inaugural Beyond Live concert streaming event earned upwards of $2 million USD from virtual ticketing; the average ticket price came out, via Naver’s V Live app, at around $30 USD, though more expensive merchandise packages were also available.
In comparison, SuperM's February show at The Forum in California saw gross sales of just over $1 million USD, as per Billboard's Boxscore ranking.
The SuperM Beyond Live event not only witnessed SuperM performing the majority of the setlist featured during their recent world tour but the septet also took the opportunity to announce an upcoming album that they said will be released “soon.” During the show, the act performed a medley of upcoming new music, and premiered a full-length performance of their new song “Tiger Inside.” Throughout the event, which was held without a live audience at the venue due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, SuperM interacted with audiences who tuned in digitally from across the world, chatting with and taking questions from the virtual audience, as well as with members of girl group Red Velvet, who video-called in for a surprise appearance.
"For most popular idol groups, offline concerts are usually held with an average of 10,000 people per concert,” says SM about the event. “However, ‘Beyond LIVE’ included 75,000 people around the world viewing in real time all at once which increases the audience size by 7.5 times when compared with offline concerts demonstrating a new growth potential for concert business."
Though there is major potential in this sort of paid-for live, wholly digital event, especially as the majority of live events have come to a halt in 2020 due to the coronavirus, the price point is a potential detractor for audiences who have many free alternatives for entertainment, especially as people around the world increasingly face hardships in the face of COVID-19-related financial losses, resulting in a debate among fans regarding ticketing costs for pay-per-view virtual concerts.
In an attempt to keep people from illegally streaming the concert, the SuperM Beyond Live show was preceded by a warning from SM Entertainment that it would potentially take legal action against those streaming the event illegally.
“Those who illegally livestream the 'Beyond LIVE' concert may receive legal remedies under copyright laws,” SuperM’s official account tweeted shortly before the event began. “Please enjoy the concert legally through ticket purchases.”
While over 75,000 viewers paid for access, it is unknown how many people viewed the event through alternative routes, and whether the Beyond Live platform will take any actions to evade future attempts of illegal streaming during upcoming concerts by WayV, NCT Dream, and NCT 127, or consider offering discounts due to financial difficulties people may be facing at this time.
