Several National Basketball Association teams are offering their arenas as polling stations. This addresses the problem of voters not being able to adequately social distance on election day in their small, neighborhood polling stations, where many would have to stand outside in the November chill.
In Anchorage, the Sullivan and the Ben Boeke arenas could be turned into large voting centers, with tons of space between voting booths. And there is loads of parking, and separate entrances and exits — a very safe place to vote. I’ve suggested this to our Assembly people here in Anchorage and to the election folks in Juneau. If you think it’s a good idea, let them know. You can reach all our Assemblymembers at wwmas@muni.org.
