WWE is set for a major shakeup on Friday when the WWE ThunderDome debuts, and it can’t come soon enough after the final show of the Performance Center era.

Despite some solid storytelling, a couple of decent matches and Raw Underground hitting its stride, last night’s chaotic show didn’t always hit the right notes with some messy developments and all-to-brief encounters.

However, there were a few bright sparks throughout the broadcast, and the night ended on a predictable but solid note featuring two of the best stars around today, and a WWE Hall of Famer.

Before we get to that, at the top of the show Drew McIntyre made his way to the ring – more on that in a bit – to take aim at Randy Orton for his attack on Ric Flair in the closing moments of last week’s show.

During a backstage segment later on, McIntyre met with Shawn MIchaels and wondered if he’s let his mentor down after working under the Heartbreak Kid at the Performance Center when he returned to NXT.

He told the WWE Champion to focus on SummerSlam this weekend and on defeating Orton to retain the title, and asked for some space at the end of the night.

When that moment came, the legendary superstar came out for the final segment to address Randy Orton’s brutal attack on Flair, as he insisted the Legend Killer doesn’t appreciate the upside of having the Nature Boy as his mentor.

As expected, his speech ended in him being hit with an RKO and a Punt Kick, before McIntyre rushed out to make the save, before chasing off the Viper.

However, with his back turned again as he checked on HBK, Orton again hit the ring, and this time delivered an RKO to the champion to stand tall going into their big title clash on Sunday.

Best of the rest

Going back to Drew’s promo at the top of Raw, there were plenty of glitches with graphics and videos flashing on the screen, with RETRIBUTION behind the chaos.

They were shown destroying a production truck as one of the crew members had to cut the feed before we returned to a number of stars talking about the group as Drew insisted they needed to deal with them, while Seth Rollins insisted he should be the locker room leader here.

In the ring, MVP issued a warning to the group, even suggesting Apollo Crews could be behind the attacks after the group first showed up as the latter returned to reignite his feud with the former US Champion.

We returned from a break with Crews already facing off with Shelton Benjamin in what should have been a great match, but it was harmed by an interrupted (a running theme tonight) as R-Truth was chased through the ring by Akira Tozawa and his ninjas.

Crews stole the win – banning the Hurt Business from ringside the weekend – but Bobby Lashley and MVP quickly attacked, with Ricochet, Cedric Alexander and Mustafa Ali all needing to make the save and break the Full Nelson.

Oh, and Benjamin pinned R-Truth to regain the 24/7 Title to end the segment.

Later in the night, MVP tried to enlist Cedric Alexander, with Crews choosing Ali and Ricochet as his partners for an Elimination Tag Team Match, which he lost in a valiant effort – which saw Alexander capture the 24/7 Title from Benjamin but later losing it back.

Elsewhere, Bachelor in Paradise star Demi Burnett was back again flirting with Angel Garza, and leading to a decent albeit brief match with The Viking Raiders’ Ivar, while Angelo Dawkins swooped in talking to the blonde beauty backstage.

Andrade provided a distraction for his partner to pick up the win, as Dawkins and Brunett revealed a shot of what seemed to be Zelina Vega slipping something into Montez Ford’s drink.

It did lead to a match later on, with Ford picking up the win over Andrade in a very short match when Bianca Belair attacked Vega to distract her client.

The earlier backstage segments sadly interrupted Mickie James’ comeback match against Natalya, and even more disrespectfully, Rollins came to ringside to ask Samoa Joe how he knew Rey Mysterio would be there tonight.

Natalya won by count out after Lana provided a distraction, but WWE clearly didn’t care so why should the fans?

In a definite high point, Bayley and Sasha Banks promised to both beat Asuka this weekend, and Shayna Baszler said she is coming for the Raw Women’s Title next.

The subsequent tag team match was absolutely fantastic, with Nia Jax getting involved and knocking a piece of plexiglass onto the Queen of Spades before they brawled to the back.

In the end, Baszler made her return and got the win as Bayley tapped out to the Kirifuda Clutch.

Rey and Dominik Mysterio came out to talk about the latter’s Street Fight at SummerSlam, and the masked luchador will be in his son’s corner this weekend.

The Monday Night Messiah appeared on the screen saying Rey put his own boy in danger, before making his way to the ring with Murphy – but Dominik attacked them from behind kendo sticks to get some measure of revenge, but the disciple saved Rollins before they could do too much damage.

Finally, Raw Underground took a step up this week, with Erik demolishing a nobody before Erik called out Dolph Ziggler for a great fight.

Later on, arturo Ruas and Riddick Moss’ physical clash turned into them attacking other people around the ring, while Marina Shafier and Jessamyn Duke made their Raw debuts as the before defeated another women before Nia Jax took them both out.
