If you’re wondering when you’ll get your second stimulus payment, you can now check online.
The IRS reopened its Get My Payment tool on Monday.
It will allow you to confirm whether or not the agency has sent your second stimulus payment. It will also confirm whether it sent your first stimulus payment, and whether the payments were sent via direct deposit or through the mail.
The IRS said the data is updated once per day overnight, so there’s no need to check more than once per day.
The IRS said it started sending direct deposit payments to millions of Americans on Dec. 29, while the first paper checks were mailed on Dec. 30.
“Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of January 4, 2021,” the IRS said, though some taxpayers have reported receiving their payments before then. “IRS phone assistors do not have additional information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.”
Taxpayers who received their first stimulus payments by direct deposit should receive their second payment the same way, the IRS said.
But, it said, some people who received their first payment by check may instead get a debit card this time, while some who received the debit card could receive a check.
If you receive a debit card, it will be issued by MetaBank and sent in a white envelope that has the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It has the Visa name on the front of the card and MetaBank on the back of the card.
Don’t worry if you haven’t received the second payment yet because it could still be on the way.
If you didn’t receive the first payment, the IRS said you can claim it on your tax return by claiming a credit called the Recovery Rebate Credit.
Then you would get the payment in the form of a tax refund.
The IRS said generally, U.S. citizens and resident aliens are eligible for the second payment as long as they’re not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s income tax return and as long as they meet certain income requirements.
Eligible individuals will receive a payment of up to $600 for singles or $1,200 for married couples with an extra $600 for each qualifying child under age 17.
“Generally, if you have adjusted gross income for 2019 up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns and surviving spouses, you will receive the full amount of the second payment,” the IRS said. “For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced.”
The eligibility cutoffs are lower than they were for the first stimulus payment.
Singles who earn between $75,000 and $87,000 would receive a partial benefit, while those who are married and file taxes jointly would get a partial benefit if they earn between $150,000 and $174,000.
