Taylor Swift fans love a good lyric analysis, and Swifties have been hard at work trying to decode “It’s Time to Go,” one of the newly released bonus tracks from Tay’s evermore deluxe album.
The singer-songwriter debuted two new songs on Friday, January 8, less than a month after surprising fans with her ninth studio album (and sister-record to the previously released folklore). Soon enough, fans started picking apart the words in "It's Time to Go," wondering if they could possibly be about the rumored falling out Taylor is said to have had with model Karlie Kloss.
To be fair, the lyrical evidence presents a pretty compelling case. On the track, Taylor sings, “When the words of a sister come back in whispers that prove she was not, in fact, what she seemed / Not a twin from your dreams, she’s a crook who was caught.” Fans took notice of the words — particularly the phrase “twin from your dreams” — and started running with the theory that the song is might just be about Karlie. (Some other Swifties think it could also be about music producer Scott Borchetta.)
Rumors about an alleged feud between Taylor and Karlie have been brewing for a while, and the idea only intensified when Taylor didn't attend Karlie’s wedding to Joshua Kushner in October 2018. (However, reps for the model explained at the time that Taylor's absence was just due to her busy work schedule.) Earlier that same year, Karlie addressed the “friend breakup” gossip in an interview, telling the New York Times, “Don't believe everything you read.” Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating, and Taylor’s new song has seemingly provided fresh fodder for the theories.
Of course, these are only theories, and there’s no way to know for sure unless Taylor explicitly shares the true meaning behind “It’s Time to Go.” That said, the singer-songwriter has given hints as to what the track is referencing, telling fans in an Instagram post that the song “is about listening to your gut when it tells you to leave. How you always know before you know, you know?”
