Shang-Chi 2: Simu Liu Says His MCU Movie Alludes to a Sequel - Screen Rant

Simu Liu says that his upcoming MCU debut alludes to Shang-Chi 2. The Master of Kung Fu made his first appearance back in December 1973 in Special Marvel Edition #15. Nearly 50 years later, he is finally making his big-screen debut. Liu called out Marvel back in 2014 for having a lack of Asian American superheroes, and five years after, it was announced at SDCC that he had been cast as Shang-Chi. After the release of Black Widow, Marvel has nine films lined up for Phase 4, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will be released in about a week.

With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings being widely released on September 3, Disney is near the end of its extensive marketing campaign for their latest MCU adventure. The trailers, images, and posters for Shang-Chi have already given a good look at what to expect in the film. In addition to introducing the newest superhero to the MCU, Shang-Chi will involve the real Mandarin (Tony Leung) set to be the main antagonist and leader of the Ten Rings organization. It's too early to tell how Shang-Chi will perform with critics, but early box office projections indicate the movie could have the lowest MCU debut since 2008's The Incredible Hulk. That being said, Liu doesn't seem too worried.

In an interview with Radio Times, Liu talked about the possibility of Shang-Chi 2 happening. Liu couldn't confirm that a sequel is in the works, but he is hopeful he will be able to return to the MCU and even joked about the sequel being the MCU's first musical. The actor also claims the end of Shang-Chi leads into a sequel. Awkwafina further added to the sequel talks saying she would want to see Katy and Shang-Chi's relationship evolve in Shang-Chi 2.

Liu: "Certainly I hope to be back. Where we leave off in the movie certainly kind of alludes to it. Fingers crossed. Is it too early to say a musical? I’ve always been a bit of a karaoke junkie. You saw a little bit of my talent in the movie, and I think that it bodes for a very exciting future for Shang as one of the first musical heroes in the MCU. I think that you would agree.”

Awkwafina: “I think it would be cool to see if [Katy] develops any interests in anything. But I think, really, I want to see where her and Shang’s relationship goes."

Disney has been working hard to diversify the MCU and bring different cultures to the big screen in recent years. Marvel Studios made waves when they released Black Panther in 2018, which was praised by fans and critics and made over $1 billion at the box office. As mentioned above, Shang-Chi isn't expected to do that well at the box office, especially with people being less willing to visit theaters due to the Delta variant. However, Disney could already be developing Shang-Chi 2 to make sure future phases continue to bring diversity to the big screen. Kevin Feige has even said that Shang-Chi will have "a great influence on the future" of the MCU, so they clearly have plans to bring Liu back at some point.

While it seems likely that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will get a sequel, it isn't a guarantee. Almost every hero who has gotten a solo film has gotten a sequel, except for Hulk and Black Widow, so it seems like the odds are in Liu's favor. However, if the movie flops at the box office and audiences and critics don't connect with the film, it's possible Shang-Chi won't be back until there is space for him in a future team-up film in Phase 5. Even if Disney is developing Shang-Chi 2, it will probably be quite some time until the film is officially announced to the public.
