While the term "water cooler TV" might be a little out-of-date in the era of streaming and working from home, every now and then a show will come along that very much warrants the term. Squid Game, the South Korean thriller currently being binged on Netflix by all of your friends, is one of them. It follows a group of individuals, all in crippling debt, who agree to participate in a series of challenges inspired by playground games, where the rules are simple: win, or die.
In addition to the many, many memes that Squid Game has spawned online, the Dalgona game has gone viral. It's the second of the six games that the characters must endure, and features in a pivotal extended sequence in episode three, "The Man With the Umbrella." In the game, each player is presented with a Dalgona honeycomb cookie that has been imprinted with a shape: a triangle, circle, star, or umbrella. They must crack away the outer edges of the cookie, leaving only the shape, without breaking it.
Of all the games depicted in the show, it is this one that has captured the internet's imagination, prompting people to try the challenge for themselves and post tutorials on how to make the honeycomb cookies at home. The recipe, it turns out, is pretty simple—it's the challenge of breaking out the shapes that is the confoundingly difficult part. The actors from the show are well aware of this, of course, but they're clued in to some clever tricks to make the whole thing easier thanks to their time filming the stressful sequence.
