TAMPA, Fla. — With summer now started for students across the Bay area, food insecurity is top of mind as students will miss out on breakfast and lunch they would normally be served at schools during the school year.
IDEA Public Schools in Tampa is launching a program today to fill the gap, making sure any children 18 and under that need regular meals get one this Summer.

“Any break that you can find, we definitely want to offer this service,” said Candice Carswell, Cafeteria Manager at IDEA Victory in North Tampa.
Starting today and running through July 22, IDEA Public Schools is inviting all kids to its campuses in Tampa for free breakfast and lunch, regardless of whether those children are enrolled with IDEA Public Schools.
The summer meals program is being launched to address those kids that may not get the full nutritional meals they need to grow over the summer because of rising prices at the grocery store.
“Kids are home during the summer, we know parents have to work. Send them to our program. Let them have breakfast and lunch and you guys take care of dinner,” Carswell said. “Anyway we can ease the burden people have been feeling since the pandemic, we are here to service that."
