For over a year now, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have made it more than a little clear that they very much do not want to be publicly associated with Donald Trump, whose vast legal problems and habit of inciting insurrections have proven to be a net negative for their social standing. The former first daughter and son-in-law have sent this very obvious message through:
- A New York Times article that cited sources familiar with the contents of the couple’s pillow talk, who insisted they knew as early as November 5, 2020, that Trump had lost the 2020 election, and that Ivanka only joined the then president at the Ellipse on January 6 out of fear he was going to do something crazy;
- A bare-minimum statement from Ivanka following her dad’s Manhattan indictment that did not suggest she believed he was innocent of the crimes he’d been accused of;
- No statement following his indictment by the Justice Department on numerous federal charges;
- A pattern that suggests that if either Ivanka or Jared spot the ex-president walking down the street, they will duck into a store or down an alley and hope he hasn’t seen them;
- The very public breakup letter issued by the former first daughter in which she declared she is done with politics, therefore clarifying that she would not be joining her father’s 2024 campaign for a second term.
All of this has undoubtedly been extremely embarrassing for Trump, whose narcissism has been thoroughly documented, particularly given the fact that Ivanka has long been known as his favorite child. But according to the former guy, it was his idea to leave the Trump-Kushners out of a potential second term.
Asked by Fox News’ Brett Baier during an interview that aired in part on Monday if Ivanka or Jared would be coming back for another stint in Washington, Trump responded, “I said, that’s enough for the family. You know why? It’s too painful for the family.” He added, “Nobody has been through what my family has been through,” complaining that Ivanka had been “making a fortune” with a “really successful line of clothing” before becoming one of his advisers, and then felt compelled to “[close] it up.” (Trump did not mention that sales had been down at the company prior to Ivanka closing up shop.) The ex-president separately suggested people should feel badly for Eric Trump, who went from getting great grades to getting subpoenas. “He’s a fine young man, good student, good everything. Comes in, we’re doing beautifully,” Trump said. “Then I decide to run for president. I mean, I don’t think anybody in the world in history has ever had more subpoenas sent to him.”
Anyway, speaking of people who will very likely not be joining a second administration:
