EXO’s Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin issue statement after SM Entertainment alleges ‘outside forces’ influence, promise to stay in the band - The Indian Express

The members of the K-pop band EXO — Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin — have been involved in a back and forth with their agency SM Entertainment after they attempted to get out of their exclusive contracts. While the agency claimed that the artists are being poached by another company, the trio’s legal representatives have now released a statement saying that no ‘outside forces’ are influencing their decisions.

The singers have said that they want to get out of their ‘slave contracts’, but have insisted that they will continue to be a part of the band even after they get out of their contracts with SM Entertainment.

The legal representatives of the three singers stated that they are independent-minded adults who are free to make their own decisions. The artists have also alleged that their financial records were not provided to them by the agency despite repeated requests, which led them to take legal action. “It is even more appalling when considering the fact that the statements reflect SM Entertainment’s true attitude toward its artists. Outside forces? Our clients are self-governing human beings fully capable of thinking, acting, and making decisions for themselves. The decision to request records of their earnings and balances was one reached after much private thought and deliberation, not one triggered by any outside force,” read a part of the statement.

The statement suggested that SM Entertainment has allowed them to ‘peruse’ the financial records but they can’t be provided with any copies of the documents, for the fear that the records might get leaked to other companies. A part of the statement read, “This law firm has consistently requested access to copies of our clients’ financial earnings and balances on behalf of the artists; however, SM Entertainment continuously refused the request, thereby giving the artists legal grounds to terminate their exclusive contracts.”

“Regardless of how this legal dispute is resolved, the artists promise to diligently continue their team activities as EXO,” the statement concluded.
