Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Hong Kong-American singer CoCo Lee (李玟) has died at the age of 48, the singer's sister and record label confirmed in separate statements Wednesday.
In a social media post, the singer's sister, Nancy Lee (李思林), said that CoCo died in hospital several days after attempting to take her own life and falling into a coma on Sunday.
Nancy Lee said her sister was diagnosed with depression several years ago, and that her condition had recently taken a turn for the worse.
She added that her sister had brought endless joy and surprises to audiences in her almost 30 years as a performer and had worked hard to break new ground in the international music industry as a Chinese-American pop star.
"The family is proud of her," Nancy Lee said.
CoCo Lee's label in Beijing Warner Music confirmed the news of her passing in a statement.
"CoCo Lee has enjoyed a brilliant music career since her debut in 1994," the company said, adding that she had used singing, dancing, and projecting positive energy to let everyone feel the power she hopes to bring to everyone.
CoCo Lee was born in 1975 in Hong Kong to a Chinese Indonesian father and a Hong Kong mother.
A singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress, Lee's career began in Hong Kong and then expanded to Taiwan and her single, "Do You Want My Love" also broke into the U.S. music charts.
She studied biochemistry at the University of California at Irvine after her family relocated to San Francisco when she was 10.
